Glossary of Terms

Soft Start limits the output power for a fixed duration after start up, or when the pid temperature controller is changed to a different configuration level

Bumpless transfer allows the temperature controller to be switched between manual and automatic modes, and back again without the control output suddenly ‘bumping’ to a different value

The Ramp/Soak control function is used to control the setpoint of the pid controller ,and its ability to ramp to a setpoint is a built-in feature for some PID controllers

Ramp and  Soak programme – Ramp increases/decreases the setpoint over a set time, or at a defined rate – with Soak Segment (also called Dwell Segment) maintaining the value of the previous segment for a defined time.

Control Loops is usually one input with one controlled output, sometimes there can be several inputs and outputs

Input sample rate is the number of updates on the input per second normally around 4 (250ms) per second

Detection of a pid loop break  as it says it looks for breaks in the control loop ( i.e. If its switching an SSR to heat, and the controller is expecting the input to increase over a period of time, then if it does not the pid controller will assume a break in the loop has occurred and send an alarm)

Input Resolution Value is down to how many decimal places in a 100.0

The Timer can be used to start the process so that when it either hits the temperature SP/Set Point or for a timed period by pressing the F key up to 99m99sec, after the set time has elapsed the outputs are switched off.

Difference between Self Tune and NOVUS Autotune – our autotune decides the best PID parameters for the application, to keep the PV Process Variable on the setpoint SP. The Self Tune is constantly monitoring and changing the PID values (not the best for ultimate accuracy and stability)
